Film Transfer Sizer

    Film Transfer Sizer

The Film Transfer Sizer is an advanced laboratory sizing and coating device that uses a metering rod to pre-meter the size onto an applicator roll, which then transfers a uniform film to the paper sheet. The coating weight ranges from 0.5-12 g/m², with an effective width of 300 mm, a sizing plate of 330×420 mm, and temperature adjustable from RT to 100°C. It supports single or double-sided application, offering uniform film, high repeatability, and simple operation. It is ideal for surface sizing, pigmented sizing, and coating formulation studies.

Product Introduction
The film transfer sizer can be used for surface sizing, pigmented sizing, and coating, with a coating weight adjustable from 0.5-12 g/m² on single or both sides, suitable for various paper grades. The equipment first uses a metering rod to pre-meter a sizing liquid or coating at a controlled temperature onto an applicator roll, forming a uniform film, which is then transferred to the substrate fixed on a sizing plate in the nip area. As the paper passes through the nip of two counter-rotating sizing rolls, the film is transferred to the web, forming a uniform coating. Because the film is pre-metered, it is thin and even. This device features uniform coating, high repeatability of coating thickness, simple operation, and minimal material usage, making it suitable for lab demonstrations, small-scale sizing trials, and formulation research.

Key Features
Metering Rod Pre-Metering: The sizing liquid is first pre-metered onto the applicator roll by a metering rod to form a uniform thin film, which is then transferred to the paper. Coat weight is precisely controllable from 0.5-12 g/m², with a thin, even film.
Independent Double-Sided Adjustment: Supports single-sided or double-sided sizing (optional), with independent adjustment of each side's coat weight, meeting differential sizing requirements for different paper grades.
Precision Temperature Control: Electrically heated with digital display temperature setting from RT to 100°C, ensuring optimal sizing liquid temperature and stable viscosity.
Uniform Sizing Effect: Roll cover hardness is reasonably configured (upper roll 45, lower roll 70). Manual or automatic pressing ensures consistent cross-machine coat weight.
Easy Operation, Low Material Usage: Sizing plate 330×420 mm, effective width 300 mm, compact design suitable for lab use, saving coating material and easy to clean.

FAQ
1. Uneven cross-machine coat weight (one side thick, one thin)
Inconsistent metering rod/sizing roll gap at ends, rolls not parallel, or poor liquid recirculation. Recalibrate roll parallelism; adjust gaps evenly; clean recirculation channels/baffles.
2. Streaks, scratches, or tracks on paper
Metering rod scaled/worn, debris in rod holder, coating liquid containing particles, or dirty roll surface. Clean or replace metering rod; clean rod holder; filter coating liquid; polish roll surface.
3. Blisters, pinholes, pits in coating
Coating viscosity too high/low, improper temperature, air in tank, or wet/dirty web. Adjust viscosity (typically 15-30 mPa·s); control temperature; check defoaming/recirculation; clean web.
4. Low coat weight or no pickup
Insufficient metering rod pressure, low pump flow, blocked hose, low liquid level, or roll slippage. Tighten metering rod; increase pump flow; clear lines; replenish; check roll drive/belt.
5. Web sticking to roll, breaks, wrinkling
Glue too viscous, temperature too high, excessive roll pressure, unstable web tension, or misaligned guide rollers. Reduce viscosity/temperature; reduce roll pressure; stabilize tension; align guide rollers.
6. Unstable glue tank level, overflow/starvation
Unstable supply pump, blocked return line, faulty level sensor, or stuck valve. Check pump; clear return line; calibrate/replace sensor; clean valve.
7. Glue darkening, high impurities, rapid scaling
Aged glue, fiber/filler contamination, high water temperature, abnormal pH, or failed filtration. Change glue regularly; enhance filtration; control temperature; adjust pH; clean tank/lines.
8. Abnormal noise/vibration from sizing/backing rolls
Bearings lacking oil/damaged, roll imbalance, loose coupling, or loose foundation bolts. Lubricate/replace bearings; dynamic balance; tighten coupling; tighten anchor bolts.
9. Metering rod jumping, chattering, not holding
Worn rod holder, insufficient clamping cylinder pressure, dirty guide rail, or bent rod. Repair/replace holder; adjust cylinder pressure; clean rail; use qualified rod.
10. Roll surface corrosion, chrome loss, scratches
Glue pH too acidic/alkaline, containing chlorine/chemicals, or hard object abrasion. Control pH; reduce impurities; handle carefully; rechrome if necessary.
11. VFD alarm, unstable speed
Unstable voltage, motor overload, poor heat dissipation, or parameter drift. Check power; reduce load; clean heat sink; reset parameters.
12. Inaccurate temperature control, glue temperature won't rise
Heating element burnt out, controller malfunction, thermocouple poor contact, or loose wiring. Test heating element; calibrate controller; reconnect thermocouple; tighten terminals.

Film Transfer Sizer

The film transfer sizer is a core piece of equipment in the paper industry for surface sizing. Its principle involves first forming a precisely controlled film of sizing solution on an applicator roll using a metering device (such as a metering rod), and then transferring this film onto the paper surface through the roll nip. Compared with traditional immersion sizing, film transfer sizing offers advantages such as precise control of pick-up weight, lower web break frequency, and reduced energy consumption in the after-drying section. In the laboratory, a small-scale film transfer sizer is used to simulate industrial production conditions and to study the relationships between sizing formulation, pick-up weight, and paper physical properties (such as water resistance, surface strength, and printability). It is an important tool for specialty paper development and the evaluation of papermaking chemicals.
